The job
A main bedroom carpet in a home with young kids and dogs
This Mullaloo family are regular customers. They have young kids, they enjoy their home, and they book a good clean every year. This time the main bedroom carpet was added to the list: a long, thick cut-pile polypropylene carpet in a house that’s mostly timber floors. Nothing was mentioned about pet accidents, so I asked. The answer was yes: now and then the dogs are in the room and accidents happen.
Getting to work
Lights off, UV torch on, and a vacuum that told its own story
I closed the curtains and the door, switched off the light and went over the carpet with my UV torch. Several urine marks lit up straight away, so I called the owner in to see them and explained I’d be doing a topical urine decontamination treatment.
Before any treatment, I vacuumed the room properly with my strong-suction vacuum. The carpet’s appearance changed straight away, and the vacuum chamber was full of dust and debris. That’s very common in homes with mostly timber floors, where a stick vacuum does most of the work. I showed the owner, who was really impressed, and confirmed that was the case. A stick vacuum is great for timber floors and quick touch-ups, but it can’t keep up with a long, thick cut pile on its own. I shared how other customers’ carpets have been transformed once they switched to a proper upright vacuum as their main carpet cleaner, keeping the stick for in-between.
With the room clean, I used the UV light again to find and mark every urine spot for treatment. There were about 20 small spots. Each one got a targeted decontamination product suited to polypropylene, worked in with agitation, followed by a polypropylene-specific pre-spray and then carpet steam cleaning (hot water extraction) of the whole room.
Result
A fresher, cleaner bedroom carpet, and a better plan for keeping it that way
The results were excellent. The carpet looked and felt completely different, and the urine spots were treated at the source rather than just cleaned on the surface. While I was there, I also cleaned their lounge suite, dining chairs and a 2-seater, all done in one day. That’s the beauty of combining jobs when I’m already on site.

How do you find pet urine stains I can’t see?
I darken the room by closing the curtains and doors and switching off the lights, then go over the carpet with a UV torch. Urine glows under UV light, so spots that are invisible in daylight show up clearly. I mark each one so it gets treated individually, so carpet stain removal can target every spot, not just the ones you can see.
Can pet urine be fully removed from carpet?
Small, recent spots usually respond very well to a targeted decontamination treatment worked in with agitation, followed by hot water extraction. Older or larger accidents can soak through to the underlay. They may need more intensive treatment, and some staining can be permanent. I’ll always tell you honestly what to expect before I start.
Is a stick vacuum enough for my carpets?
Stick vacuums are great on hard floors and for quick touch-ups, but they struggle to pull dirt out of thick or long carpet. For carpeted rooms, a good upright vacuum with strong suction as your main cleaner, and the stick in between, makes a real difference to how your carpet looks and how long it lasts.
Does polypropylene carpet need special treatment?
Polypropylene is a durable synthetic fibre that’s common in family homes. It cleans well, but it holds onto oily soil, so I use a pre-spray made specifically for polypropylene before hot water extraction to get the best result.
Can you clean my carpets and couches on the same visit?
Yes. Combining carpet and upholstery cleaning on one visit is very common. On this Mullaloo job I cleaned the bedroom carpet, a large lounge suite, dining chairs and a 2-seater, all in one day.
