The job
Light fabric, water marks and a few colourful surprises
This Mullaloo family are regular customers who book a yearly clean of their lounge suite and dining chairs, often with something extra added on. This time it was a large, light-fabric six-seater lounge with chaise, the fabric dining chairs and a 2-seater in the dining area, plus a bedroom carpet on the same visit.
With little kids in the house, the lounge had various water marks and stains, and some highlighter marks in different colours. I explained upfront that some of the highlighter might not come out. The owner was confident they were washable, so we agreed to give it our best.
Getting to work
Tarps down, sofas lifted, and the lounge turned into a workstation
I decided to use the large lounge room as my workstation for the whole job, including the dining chairs and the loose cushions from the 2-seater. First I covered the timber floors with tarps. Before moving the sofas onto them, I lifted each one onto its side to clean underneath: cobwebs, dust, small toys and the odd snack that had found its way under the couches over the year. With the sofas back down on the tarps, the timber floors were fully protected.
Every piece was vacuumed and the marks pre-treated, then cleaned with hot water extraction using an upholstery hand tool, seat by seat, including the chaise. For the highlighter marks, I worked through several fabric-safe products.
Result
A fresh lounge suite and chairs, with honest results on the tough marks
The lounge suite, dining chairs and 2-seater all came up really nicely, and most of the highlighter marks lifted. A few small marks were permanent and wouldn’t shift with any of the safe products, which is exactly why I always flag them before starting.
Combined with the bedroom carpet, it was a full day’s work, and seeing everything come together by the end of it was a great feeling. The family were very happy and supportive throughout the day.

Will upholstery cleaning damage my timber floors?
No. I lay tarps over the floor and place the sofas on them while I work, so timber floors stay clean, dry and protected throughout the clean.
Can you clean fabric dining chairs too?
Yes. Fabric dining chairs can be cleaned on the same visit as your lounge suite, and it’s one of the most common add-ons. Kitchen and dining chairs collect spills and food marks just like the couch does.
Can you clean my couch and carpets on the same day?
Yes. Combining upholstery and carpet cleaning works well together. On this Mullaloo job I cleaned a six-seater lounge with chaise, dining chairs, a two-seater and a bedroom carpet, all in one day.
How long does a couch take to dry after lounge cleaning?
As part of our standard process, loose cushions are rotated every couple of hours while they dry and stay off the bases until the next morning, to make sure everything is fully dry before it goes back together.
