City Beach is one of my favourite areas to work in, and Steamz Carpet and Tile Cleaning has looked after homes here for years. The homes are beautiful, many of them multi-storey with lovely sea views, and the sofas, couches and lounges inside them are used and enjoyed by the whole family. When I’m in the area I try to have lunch at Floreat Beach, right in the heart of City Beach: grassed family areas, sheltered tables, a playground, good food and a view that never gets old.

City Beach is part of the Western Suburbs, one of my busiest areas, so I’m here regularly and never rushing between jobs. Every sofa and couch gets the time it needs. I also clean upholstery in nearby Floreat, Wembley Downs, Doubleview and Woodlands. City Beach sits in the Town of Cambridge and is part of our Western Suburbs service area.

The job
A large fabric couch that needed proper fabric couch cleaning, plus six dining chairs
This City Beach home has a light-coloured fabric 3.5-seater and 1.5-seater sofa set with loose cushions, which I clean every year. This visit, three large loose cushions from lounge chairs and six white synthetic dining chairs were added.
The couches had a few water marks and stains. The soft “teddy bear” fabric on the lounge chair cushions was covered in small bits stuck in the pile. And the dining chairs felt dirty in the gap between the seat and the backrest.
Getting to work

The driveway has a slope, and the truck-mounted machine has to run on level ground, so I parked in the garage. It’s also closer to the work area: it saves 6 to 10 metres of hose, which means stronger suction. The back of the van faces away from the house so the engine fumes go outside. It started raining during the clean, but the van’s lid opens upwards and keeps the machinery covered, so the work carried on as normal.
Inside, I laid tarps over the porcelain tiles to keep them clean, dry and safe from slipping. I picked the bits off the teddy-bear cushions by hand before vacuuming, and moved the couches to vacuum underneath. A vacuum nozzle couldn’t shift the food scraps stuck in the dining chair joints, so I unscrewed the seats and backrests, cleaned the joints properly and left the parts to dry.
On the couches, the water marks and stains were pre-treated, and then cleaned with hot water extraction, going over the cushions and arm rests in both directions. A few loose threads on the arm rests, caused by cat claws, were trimmed so they can’t pull further. On earlier visits these were more visible and were trimmed too, so now forms part of the clean.
Result
Clean, solid and dry, even on a rainy day
The sofa set, the lounge chair cushions and the dining chairs all came up beautifully. The chairs were reassembled with every bolt tightened, and one missing bolt replaced, so they’re solid with no more movement on the backrest.
Even with rain outside, drying wasn’t a problem: inside the house it stays dry and the temperature can be controlled. As part of our standard process, the cushions should be rotated every couple of hours while they dry and stay off the bases until the next morning, to make sure they’re fully dry before they go back.

Can you clean dining chairs as well as sofas?
Yes. Fabric and synthetic (PU) dining chairs can be cleaned on the same visit. Synthetic materials are cleaned with a controlled-moisture process so the surface doesn’t swell or bubble.
My cat has pulled threads on the couch arms. Can you help?
Loose threads from cat claws can be trimmed during the clean so they can’t catch and pull further. It tidies the fabric up, but it isn’t a repair of the weave itself.
Do you still clean when it’s raining?
Yes. My van’s lid opens upwards and keeps the truck-mounted machinery covered, so rain doesn’t stop the job. Inside the house it stays dry, and the temperature can be controlled to help drying.
Why do you sometimes ask to park in the garage?
The truck-mounted machine has to run on level ground, which a sloping driveway can’t give. Parking closer also saves hose length, which means stronger suction. The back of the van always faces away from the house so the engine fumes stay outside.
Will cleaning my couch damage my tiles or floors?
No. I lay tarps over the floor around the work area so the tiles stay clean, dry and safe from slipping while cushions are removed and pre-spray and hot water extraction are used.
How long after couch cleaning can I use my couch again?
Cushions should be rotated every couple of hours while they dry, and they stay off the bases until the next morning, to make sure everything is fully dry before it goes back together.
